Rhododendron (elepidote - Large Leaved)
"Big Leaf" rhododendrons. These are what most people first think of when they hear the word rhododendron. “Elepidote” literally means “without scales,” referring to a characteristic of the familiar large leaf rhododendrons. Foliage of this class of rhododendrons, although generally larger in size, can vary from about an inch long as in the species R. proteoides to as much as three feet long in the species R. sinogrande. Some have incredible fuzzy indumentum on the new growth and under the leaves, as on R. yakushimanum. The flowers can be almost any color. This group includes a very large number of hybrids. RHODODENDRON 'Brown Eyes'
(C8) One of the best all-around growers. 'Brown Eyes' is a classic, with large pink trusses set off by a strong bronze flare in the flower. It is very hardy and blooms in the early midseason. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Buzzer Beater'
(C8) The flowers are held in dome shaped trusses of 16-18. The color is a pale orange yellow with a strong greenish yellow v-shaped flare on the upper petal. Foliage is moderate olive green. more info

(C8) One of the last to bloom in what we call the midseason (May 25 for us), 'Cadis' puts on a floriferous show with its fragrant ruffled light-pink trusses with yellow deep in its throat. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Calsap'
(C8) 'Calsap' has combined 'Catalgla''s hardiness with 'Sappho' to produce a super hardy, well shaped, upright grower. It flaunts white flowers in a formal truss with the bold purple flare of 'Sappho' on the upper lobe. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Cape White'
(C8) Very pale lavendar tinged buds quickly turn pure white and emerge as gorgeous, high domed trusses of highly ruffled flowers with remarkable grace. This upright shrub has dark green glossy leaves. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Capistrano'
(C8) The color is pure medium to light yellow on a full and dome-shaped truss about the size and shape of 'Roseum Elegans'. In mid-May, the dense, mounded plant is covered with trusses which are in pleasing proportion to the medium green leaves. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Caroline'
(C8) An exceptionally good grower. The large flowers are light orchid pink, moderately fragrant, in loose trusses on a plant with fairly narrow, light green leaves. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Carte Blanche'
(C8) White flowers in domed trusses of 18-20. Each flower is open funnel-shaped, with 5 wavy- edged lobes. Bud is purplish pink, opening to light purplish pink and aging to white. Retains color longer on outside and on margins. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Catalina'
(C8) Pink flowers that fade to white in the center, resulting in a picotee effect. Grows in a medium mounded plant habit; Catalina's yak heritage is apparent in its attractive, dense foliage with some indumentum. Is said to be somewhat sun tolerant. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Catalode' (County of York)
(C8) The large white flowers of 'Catalode' are accented with a yellow flare and held in a conical truss. Its distinctive apple-green leaves which can be up to a foot long, make it one of the easiest rhododendron hybrids to identify when not in bloom. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Catawbiense Album'
(C8) It is a well-shaped medium growing plant with glossy convex leaves and white flowers with a yellow green flare. One of the "ironclads" and a great one to grow in that "trying" location. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Charles Loomis'
(C8) Our own plant, sitting in 80% sun with typically 20 to 40 days above 90°F never shows any ill effects. Flowers are rounded trusses emerging first as blush pink and quickly fading to white, much like yak hybrids. The foliage is narrow and recurved. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Charlestown'
(C8) The flowers are pink, slightly ruffled, with a lighter center and bloom about a week earlier than most Dexters. The habit is upright with large leaves and the plant is a sturdy grower. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Consolini's Windmill'
(C8) A stunning picotee-type flower, a multicolored red with a broad longitudinal white band in each lobe. A fast grower with good habit and shiny foliage, and does best in a site with dappled shade. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Cunningham's White'
(C8) Buds flushed pink open to white flowers with a pale yellow eye; has small, upright, many-flowered trusses. Plant is spreading and compact, with glossy dark green foliage. more info
